Child Passenger Safety in New York State

From One Beacon Insurance

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 14 and under. Most parents believe they are using child safety seats properly, but it is estimated that four out of five children are improperly restrained. When used properly, child safety seats can prevent injuries and save lives.

New York State’s Occupant Restraint Law.

The driver and all front-seat passengers must wear seat belts, one person per belt.

All children under the age of four must be restrained in a child safety seat that meets Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213.

Children under the age of 16 riding in the back seat must wear seat belts

The Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee has created an excellent online publication about child safety seats. This publication includes information about choosing the correct child safety seat, installing child safety seats, types of child safety seats and children in seat belts. Please be sure to cheek out this website and also share this information with your insureds.

Please remember that OneBeacon Insurance and the Greenburgh Police Department offer a child safety seat program here in the Westchester Branch. The program is open to the public on the first and third Saturdays of every month. No appointment is necessary. For more information, please call 914.682.5334. We are seeking agents to co-sponsor sites elsewhere in the Hudson Valley. Contact us if you want to participate.

Driving Accident Ratio “Hits” Home

Progressive Insurance Company released a survey of 11,000 people who reported a crash in 2001. The survey found that 52% of reported crashes occurred five miles or less from home and 77% occurred 15 miles or lees from home. Twenty-three (23%) occurred within one mile of home.

Companies often defend territorial rating programs to help determine the cost of insurance. The study supports this portion of the rating process. The study pointed out that consumers drive most of their miles close to their homes, and the results of the study were not unexpected. But this is the first time that data claims) were used specifically to determine the actual percentage of losses that occurred close to the consumer’s home.
