Two of the more common plans:
- 401 (k) - 401(k) is a retirement plan that some companies offer their employees as a way to save for retirement. An employee contributes to their 401(k) based on a percentage of their gross wages. Taxes are deferred until the funds are withdrawn from the account. Penalties can apply for early withdrawal. In some cases an employer may match or partly contribute to an employee’s contribution. A major advantage of a 401(k) plan is the fact that it reduces an employee’s taxable income based on the amount of their contribution.
- Profit Sharing and Money Purchase Plans – These are two alternatives to a 401(k) that an employer may offer. A profit sharing plan allows an employer to vary the amount it contributes to the plan each year. A money purchase plan requires an employer to contribute a certain percentage to each employee.
