Progressive Insurance Company released a survey of 11,000 people who reported a crash in 2001. The survey found that 52% of reported crashes occurred five miles or less from home and 77% occurred 15 miles or lees from home. Twenty-three (23%) occurred within one mile of home.
Companies often defend territorial rating programs to help determine the cost of insurance. The study supports this portion of the rating process. The study pointed out that consumers drive most of their miles close to their homes, and the results of the study were not unexpected. But this is the first time that data claims) were used specifically to determine the actual percentage of losses that occurred close to the consumer’s home.
